Reminder: never give up. Meghan Wilson, who has quadriplegia, graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with her M.D. and Ph.D. (Thanks, Becka for sharing the story!)

" The expectation behind “strong is the new skinny” is that women who take it to heart will allow the pursuit of strength to supplant the pursuit of skinniness when it comes to their physical goals.  But what is actually happening for a lot of women is that they are not abandoning “skinny” in favor of “strong.”  Instead, strength has become yet another physical ideal to be piled on top of all of the other physical ideals they are already trying their damnedest to attain. .... We don’t need a new “skinny.”  We don’t need a new beauty standard, nor do we need yet another physical ideal hanging over our every thought and move like a little black cloud of doom.  What we need to do is change the paradigm so that we value our bodies for all of the amazing things they let us do." What happens when the pursuits of “skinny” and “strong” collide? Fair Food, an organization in Michigan, is piloting a program in three grocery stores where a $10 purchase with food stamps will result in a $10 reward card for local produce. The program is modeled after similar ones for Farmer's Markets. It seems like a promising way to encourage enrolled individuals to eat more fruits and vegetables, so I hope it works out and expands. If you like words, this list will gorgonize mesmerize you.

"Starting in the 1990s, though, scientists began to realize that fat is best understood as a single huge endocrine gland, one that wields powerful influence over the rest of the body. “For a typical North American, their fat tissue is their biggest organ,” says James Kirkland, M.D., director of the Robert and Arlene Kogod Center on Aging at the Mayo Clinic. ... FAT IS STUBBORN, DEMANDING stuff. Much of the time it’s telling you to eat more, which is one reason why most attempts at dieting are doomed to fail."   Your Fat Has a Brain. Seriously. The rate of food allergies has more than doubled over the past decade, and there are now an estimated 5.9 million children in the United States with food allergies (along with another 2.3 million adults); to put it another way, in every classroom, roughly 1 in 13 children will have a food allergy." The Allergy Buster: Can a Radical New Treatment Save Children With Severe Food Allergies?

"Intuitively, we know that the best stuff in life isn’t stuff at all, and that relationships, experiences and meaningful work are the staples of a happy life. I like material things as much as anyone. I studied product design in school. I’m into gadgets, clothing and all kinds of things. But my experiences show that after a certain point, material objects have a tendency to crowd out the emotional needs they are meant to support. ...Often, material objects take up mental as well as physical space." Living With Less. "Women’s historical willingness to endure horrible dangers, to submit to extreme and prolonged pain, to risk grave injury and death rather than remain pregnant, tells us something important about female desperation and determination, and the price women were — and still are — willing to pay to control their own bodies. What it tells us is that women will always find ways to end an unwanted pregnancy, no matter what the law says, no matter the risks to themselves."  Leeches, Lye and Spanish Fly

“ '[Alcohol] decreases your ADH and you are producing more fluid. So when you produce more fluid and you fill your bladder more, you suppress more ADH,' Moore says. And within 20 minutes of drinking, alcohol irritates the bladder, leading to that uncomfortable feeling of a full bladder, even if it isn’t." A happy hour urban myth: Is 'breaking the seal' a real thing?

"There’s no ideal stratagem for figuring out whom any one of us should be with and how to chart a course to that person, no fail-safe process for determining whether a twosome will endure. The act of getting together, whether brokered by yenta or Yahoo, is one of willed credulousness and wishful thinking as much as anything else, the triumph of optimism over morning breath. And it’s a wager, because people have hidden layers, hidden intentions. Your beloved could switch political parties. Your hookup could insist on a soundtrack of Celine Dion. Not knowing what’s in store is the very soul of romance: what makes it so scary, and what makes it so thrilling." Manti and the Mating Game

"Well, what does eat correctly mean, you know? That's really what we're talking about here, is what does eat correctly mean?
